4.21 Planning Commission Recap

Last night, I attended last night’s Orono Planning Commission meeting and came away genuinely impressed by the caliber of our commissioners. Although many of them are new to the role, they were clearly well-informed and demonstrated a strong grasp of the nuances of city codes.

One of the most interesting discussions was the potential revision of the code to reduce lot sizes for some farm animals—such as hens—on Orono properties. The committee is eager to hear from Orono residents on this issue. I would encourage everyone to watch the meeting and to attend future Planning Commission meetings, which occur on the third Monday of each Month at 6 PM at Orono Council Chambers.

The overall tone of the Planning Commission meeting felt noticeably different from the April 14th Orono City Council meeting. I had the opportunity to talk to Mayor Tunheim afterward, and his response to my observation made me smile: “One of my goals is to make government boring again.” This is a refreshing take, and maybe just what we need in Orono.

Let’s keep the conversation going!

Join me for coffee at the Orono Market THIS Thursday (4/24) and Saturday (4/26) from 7:30 - 9 AM!
